I started this post ages ago and I was waiting until I found the right time and app to turn my shitty homemade flowchart (see pic) into a nice and more complex computer-made infographic. But being realistic I’d better publish it as is or delete it altogether.
As a natural quitter and as a person who doesn’t really like travelling, the ‘no’ to the first question solves the equation fast enough. But this diagram is not for me, but for people who have to endure travelling with me.
So these are my questions for you, o my travel companion:
- Are you sure you really need me to travel with you?
- Can you put up with the idea of spending a lot of time with me, given my state of fitness, my eventual needs of silence and solitude and my hypochondriac nature?
- If I quit because I can’t stand travelling any more, will you be ready to continue on your own?
- If you need to make money during your trip, are you ready to analyse the legal implications of working or staying in a particular country for that purpose?
- If there are risks involving irreversible damage (i.e. death, disability, life sentence) will you be sensible enough to quit or accept that I might quit even if you don’t?
- If I quit because I think there’s a risk of irreversible damage but you don’t agree with my risk assessment, will you be ready to continue on your own?
Food for thought!
